The Apostle of Aquitaine and the Miracle of Limoges
The history of our network of dedications has its roots in the 3rd century AD. Sent from Rome to evangelize the southwest of Gaul, Martial settled in Limoges.
As the city’s first bishop, he is traditionally credited with numerous miracles and created immense popular fervor. His tomb quickly became the heart of a radiant Benedictine abbey, an essential stop for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
From Limoges to the Ségala: The Mark of Saint-Martial
What link connects the prestigious abbey of Limoges to the steep landscapes of the Tarn valley? It is the story of exceptional medieval fervor. Driven by ecclesiastical powers and local lordships, the memory of Martial became deeply rooted in the sandstone and schist of our hills.
Far from being a mere relic of the past, this dedication has shaped a unique concentration of rural buildings on both sides of the valley, creating a true heritage network that our association is committed to cataloging and preserving.
