The Church

Area of action of the Gaycre à Venir association (Tarn Valley – Gaycre-Cadix sector).

Nestled in the heart of the Tarn valley, in the commune of Cadix, the Saint-Martial church of Gaycre is a precious witness to our local heritage.

The Treasures of the Saint-Martial Church

Today, water threatens the structure and its architectural elements. This situation requires urgent attention to ensure its preservation for future generations.

This statue depicts Saint Germaine of Pibrac (sometimes referred to simply as Germaine), a local figure particularly venerated in Southwestern France (she was born and lived in Pibrac, near Toulouse, in the 16th century).

She is the patron saint of shepherdesses, people with disabilities, abused children, and the impoverished.

Saint Martial is a major legendary and historical figure: he is known as the very first bishop of Limoges and the ‘Apostle of Aquitaine’ in the 3rd century. It was he who evangelized our entire great region (which encompassed the Tarn at that time).

Why does our church bear his name?

A testimony of antiquity:

Churches dedicated to Saint Martial are almost always very ancient. Dedicating this edifice to Saint Martial serves as a reminder that Gaycre was created as a place of worship. Life in the hamlet is deeply rooted in the medieval history of the Tarn valley.

The legend of the Saint’s travels:

Local memory and oral traditions often link these edifices to the journeys of Saint Martial and his disciples, who came to Christianize the countryside along waterways such as the Tarn. Building the church here was a way of placing the hamlet and its inhabitants under the direct protection of this great patron saint.
